Next-Generation PON: NG-PON2 and XGS-PON

It is clear that bandwidth demands will grow in the next years at a faster pace than ever before. Recently much progress has been made in the standardization of next-generation passive optical network (PON) standards. The result is that two new next-generation passive optical network (PON) technologies have been standardized and are ready for deployment: XGS-PON and NG-PON2.

Both XGS-PON and NG-PON2 transmit data through fiber-optic cables, offering very high-capacity connections at speeds up to 10 Gbps (and beyond) and can co-exist with existing PON technologies on the same fiber to individual subscriber.

Calix Next-Generation PON solutions, as part of our Optisis solution for access networks, support both XGS-PON and NG-PON2 technology.

NG-PON2 has been successfully deployed in live networks at some of the biggest service providers such as Verizon in the USA, CityFiber GB, Northpower Fiber NZ, Pilot Mannhatan NY / USA.

Optisis, as one of the first in the region, has established two operating system with NG-PON2 and XGS-PON technology, which were intended for testing and presenting to operators.

More about Next-Generation PON which can co-exist with other PON technologies on the same infrastructure, you can find here in Calix White paper: Next-Generation PON: Eliminating physical constraints from the access network.
